Victor Jara: Native American Shaman (Chilean Mapuche)

"I couldn’t fall: the bullets slammed into my chest. Everything was in slow motion. There was no pain, no awareness. What was happening? I felt as if in a dream, then I was falling.

White light came toward me. I fell into the light. “What was this? Was I dead?”

Only moments prior, I had been joking with six, big guards. Trying to defuse the situation, I had them laughing.

Then they fired. Maybe a sweaty finger slipped on a trigger; I don’t know."

September 11

On September 11, 1973, Chilean forces attacked, in a horrible, savage coordinated action the major cities in Chile. Agents of the state arrested Victor Jara and many others including Chilean, American, French, Spanish and Swiss citizens. Many thousands of people were herded into stadiums for interrogation. Without due process, that often resulted in death by firing squad. It happened to Professor Victor Jara.

Victor Jara was found dumped in a cemetary with forty-four bullets in his chest.

"Tens of thousands of Chileans were killed in the coup itself, including Victor Jara, a popular musician publicly executed by the junta. In the years immediately following the coup, more than 100,000 Chileans were tor_d, disappeared, arrested, or forced into exile."
